SEPOY X BAHEEJA 2018 (C)
We are delighted to have purchased this exciting sprinting prospect by Sepoy who was secured by Denis Hogan and his team at the Autumn Newmarket horse in training sales.
Prior to the sales we asked Denis to secure us a horse which would have the credentials to make up into a nice sprinting-miler type. Denis has come up trumps in finding us this Sepoy colt who fits this mould perfectly and well within the budget we had. This is a type of horse that Denis excels in training with no better example than leading Irish sprinters Make a Challenge and Sceptical. Both of those mentioned horses along with other horses Denis has had success with hail from leading operation dispersals which is exactly where this colt has come from in Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoums Shadwell Stud draft.
The colt is by 4 time Group 1 winning stallion Sepoy who earned over £2.5 million in prize money in a very successful racing career including being the champion 2yo in Australia and 3yo Champion Sprinter. Sepoy has had early success with both his North and South Hemisphere crops including Group winners such as Alizee, Unforgetable Filly, Indian Blessing, Dabyah and Mighty Gurkha. His progeny are known to act on the all-weather aswell as turf which opens up the options available.
The dam of our colt is the black type mare Baheeja who was a very talented racemare in her own right being rated just shy of 100 and being a 4 time winner including being black type placed in which she only went down a neck on her last start in a listed race. She is by one of the world leading and Champion sire Dubawi who’s 2021 stud fee stands at £250,000. Baheeja is also a proven broodmare with 3 out of her 4 progeny to make the track being winners and the highest rated of them being Dowayla who happens to be a full sister to our colt. Dowayla herself was rated 96 on the track and showed plenty of ability for Godolphin.
Denis has sat on the horse himself thus far as he likes to get a gauge of his new stock coming in and has reported that colt shows ability at home and looks a extremely well brought horse at this stage. He has acclimatised to his new surroundings very well and looks a steal at the price we have brought him for, the reason for which has likely a lot to do with the current global situation owing to the Covid-19 virus which has created somewhat of a buyers market and what was interesting to note was the constant lack of buyers at the sale from the middle-east and Australia due to travel restrictions which is where a lot of horses of the colt’s calibre end up being bought to go to. .
Denis Hogan is a trainer we here at Pioneer know very well and have long admired for his ability to get big performances from relatively cheap purchases. Denis has been going from strength to strength with each season being better than his last, and what really stands out is that last season Denis with a relatively small string of horses had the distinction of finishing the season in the top 10 trainers for not only the flat but also the jumps championship leaderboards. This year he shows no signs in slowing down with his best start to a season ever and has been represented extremely well by flagbearers and leading sprinters Make a challenge and Sceptical and a very successful Galway festival with plenty more to come.
