MOTBEQ 2017 (G) SPEIGHTSTOWN X ZAROOF

We are delighted to have purchased this exciting sprinting prospect in Motbeq who was secured by Denis Hogan and his team at the recent horse in training sales. Prior to the sales we asked Denis to secure us a horse which would have the credentials to make up into a nice sprinting type. Denis has come up trumps in finding us Motbeq who fits this mould perfectly well within the budget we had. This is a type of horse that Denis excels in training with no better example than leading Irish sprinters Make a Challenge and Sceptical. Both of those mentioned horses along with other horses Denis has had success with hail from leading operation dispersals which is exactly where Motbeq has come from in Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoums Shadwell Stud draft.

The horse is by Group 1 winning stallion Speightstown who himself was a $2 million yearling and has produced over 175 stakes winners including 17 group 1 winners on all surfaces on all corners of the planet. He currently stands at a stud fee of $70,000 and is regarded as one of the leading stallions in North America. Some of his well known progeny would include Lord Shanakill, Tropics and recent Breeders Cup winner Tamarkuz. The dam of Motbeq, Zaroof is extremely well bred herself being a half sister to a US Group 1 winner Miss Shop and a US Grade 2 winner Trappe Shot with plenty more black type performers being seen on the page. She has already produced 2 winners from 3 runners herself showing her capabilities to produce winners as a broadmare. She is by Group 1 winning stallion Street Cry who was a extremely successful stallion in his own right and damsire to horses such as Vino Rosso, Diversify, Skitter Skatter and Denis’ very own Make a challenge. This was another reason this horse appealed to Denis.

Denis has been on the horse himself thus far as he likes to get a gauge of his new stock coming in and has reported that Motbeq has given him a great feel and seems a type for the sprint trips. He  has acclimatised to his new surroundings very well and looks a steal at the price we have brought him for, the reason for which has likely a lot to do with the current global situation owing to the Covid-19 virus which has created somewhat of a buyers market and what was interesting to note was the lack of buyers at the sale from the middle-east and Australia due to travel restrictions which is where a lot of horses of Motbeq’s calibre end up being bought to go to.

Denis Hogan is a trainer we here at Pioneer know very well and have long admired for his ability to get big performances from relatively cheap purchases. Denis has been going from strength to strength with each season being better than his last, and what really stands out is that last season Denis with a relatively small string of horses had the distinction of finishing the season in the top 10 trainers for not only the flat but also the jumps championship leaderboards. This year he shows no signs in slowing down with his best start to a season ever and has been represented extremely well by flagbearers and leading sprinters Make a challenge and Sceptical and a very successful Galway festival with plenty more to come.
